Privacy Policy
TRANSPARENCY FIRST
We built this keyboard for the Tamil diaspora. Your trust matters more than our data. Here is exactly what we collect — and what we never touch.
Effective date: May 10, 2026 · Last updated: May 10, 2026
SECTION 01
Tanglish Standard IME is an AI-powered keyboard designed for Tamil diaspora speakers who text in Romanised Tamil (Tanglish). The product is built and operated by a 16-year-old Tamil-American developer based in Dallas, Texas, USA.
This privacy policy applies to the Tanglish Standard IME keyboard extension (Chrome, iOS, Android), the web application at tanglish-ime.vercel.app, and the Tanglish community platform (when launched).
SECTION 02
|
DATA TYPE |
WHAT IT IS |
WHY WE COLLECT IT |
|
Word hash |
A one-way SHA-256 hash of the word you typed. The original word cannot be recovered from this hash. |
To track which spellings the community accepts or rejects without storing what you actually typed. |
|
Suggestion signal |
A true/false value — did you accept or dismiss the suggestion? |
To train the spelling standardisation model on community preference. |
|
Timestamp |
The time the suggestion signal was recorded. |
To weight recent usage more heavily in the corpus. |
|
City and country |
Your approximate city and country. Coarsened from IP — never precise coordinates. |
To power the diaspora world map and enable city-level community features. Opt-in only. |
|
Device and OS |
Device type (iPhone, Android, desktop) and OS version. |
Product analytics only — to ensure compatibility across platforms. |
|
Emotion context |
An anonymised emotion classification (e.g. happy, stressed, nostalgic) derived from sentence patterns — not from message content. |
To power emotion-aware next-word predictions. Stored without any personally identifiable information. |
|
Registration data |
Email address and password (hashed). Required to activate the IME keyboard. |
To associate contribution points and community features with a registered user. |
Important: Raw keystrokes are never transmitted from your device. Words are hashed on-device before any data leaves your phone or browser. We cannot read your messages, passwords, or any personal text you type.
SECTION 03
The iOS keyboard requests Allow Full Access. The Chrome extension requests access to active tab content. Here is exactly what these permissions mean for you:
|
PERMISSION |
WHAT IT ALLOWS |
WHAT WE ACTUALLY DO |
|
Allow Full Access (iOS) |
Allows the keyboard to connect to the internet and send data. |
We use this only to call our AI suggestion API and log anonymised word signals. We never transmit raw text. |
|
Password field detection |
Allows us to detect if a password field is active. |
We use this to completely disable all data collection and API calls when a password field is detected. Nothing is logged from password fields — ever. |
|
Credit card detection |
Allows us to detect payment input fields. |
Same as above — all collection is disabled in payment fields. We never see or log financial data. |
|
Chrome tab access |
Allows the extension to read the active tab's content to position the suggestion bar. |
We read only the text in the active input field to show suggestions. Page content is never transmitted to our servers. |
SECTION 04
All data is stored in Supabase (PostgreSQL), a SOC 2 Type II compliant database provider hosted on AWS. Data is encrypted in transit (TLS 1.2+) and at rest (AES-256).
User IDs are pseudonymous UUIDs — they are not linked to your name or email address in usage event tables. Your email address is stored separately and is never included in corpus or analytics data.
Geographic data is coarsened to city and country level at the point of collection. Precise coordinates are never stored on our servers.

We do not sell your data to any third party. We do not share your data with advertisers. We do not use your data to build individual advertising profiles.
SECTION 06
Depending on your location, you may have the following rights regarding your personal data:
|
RIGHT |
WHAT IT MEANS |
|
Access |
Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you. |
|
Correction |
Request correction of inaccurate personal data. |
|
Deletion |
Request deletion of your account and all associated personal data. Word event signals are anonymised and cannot be individually deleted as they contain no personal identifiers. |
|
Portability |
Request your personal data in a machine-readable format. |
|
Objection |
Object to processing of your personal data for certain purposes. |
|
Opt-out of location |
Disable city-level location sharing at any time in the app settings. This removes your pin from the diaspora map. |
To exercise any of these rights, email us at the address below. We will respond within 30 days.
SECTION 07
Tanglish Standard IME is available to users of all ages. Users under the age of 13 in the United States (or the applicable age of digital consent in their country) should use this service only with parental consent. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13 without parental consent. If you believe a child has provided personal data without consent, please contact us for immediate deletion.
SECTION 08
We may update this privacy policy as the product grows. When we make significant changes, we will update the effective date at the top of this page and notify registered users by email. Continued use of the keyboard after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
We are a small team and we read every message. Reach out directly for any privacy-related questions, data requests, or concerns.
